Is Aspartame Bad For Me? Part II

A few weeks ago, we talked about Aspartame which is frequently used in food items that are sugar free. A few of you had some questions and so I thought I would answer them to help you figure out how you can avoid this ingredient and why you should….

1. What is aspartame typically in? You can find aspartame in

  • sugar free products
  • diet products
  • soft drinks
  • Equal/Nutrasweet
  • some iced teas
  • some candies
  • gelatin desserts
2. What can aspartame do to me? Aspartame has a lot of side effects, here are a few of them…
  • Headaches
  • Fainting
  • Seizure
  • Memory Loss
  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Gastrointestinal Distress
  • Allergies
  • Skin rashes
  • Menstrual Problems
  • Mood Swings
  • Itching

3. But the FDA says it’s ok…. The FDA does approve of this ingredient but that doesn’t always mean it’s safe. In the 50’s and 60’s, The FDA believed that an ingredient called cyclamates was safe to consume but now it is banned due to the fact that it has been linked to cancer. So, just because the FDA regulates something, doesn’t mean it is always ok. It’s always best to eat things as natural as you possibly can…meaning eat thing that include ingredients that you can recognize and that are close to it’s natural state as possible. Foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are very healthy.
