The Bible has a lot to say on how we should treat others when we are upset with something they’ve done or said.
Here are a few verses that give you practical steps as to how to behave in a loving and forgiving way when in conflict.
My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.
He who answers before listening- that is his folly and his shame.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Look after each otherso that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
The Bible has plenty to say on interacting with one another when there’s tension-it’s as if God knew that we would certainly face disagreements with one another! 🙂
I hope these verses encourage you to truly do all that you can to be respectful, kind, forgiving, and loving when you’re talking with someone you disagree with. Remember that it is ok to disagree…listen to our episode on how to respectfully disagree for more tips & encouragement!
Here’s one practical way you can handle a disagreement, when you wish to tell someone that they are doing something they don’t like give them a compliment sandwich! 🙂
- Tell them something you appreciate/like/enjoy about themselves or they way the handled something
- Then tell them what displeased you & how it made you feel/or how you would like it to change
- Then remind them again that you do appreciate them!
Try and let me know how it works for you!
